Position Summary
The Interpreter is responsible for providing interpreting services for complex situations for a variety of pt. care settings and business needs, outpatient centers, and the Emergency Department's non-English speaking patients and their families. These activities will include interpreting in life threatening and psychosocial situations for physicians, nurses, and support staff whenever the need arises. The Interpreter must be able to communicate fluently in the specified language (e.g., Spanish, Cambodian); both reading and writing will be required for this position. The Interpreter must be able to provide interpreting services remotely using video conferencing technology and provide troubleshooting assistance to providers as needed.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Interprets using the consecutive, sight, and simultaneous modes for patients, families, physicians, and staff by providing language services in-person, via telephone and video-conferencing technology.
- Translates and proofreads medical and legal documents accurately, without omissions, additions, change in meaning, or summarization.
- Coordinates and assigns internal and outsourced interpretation and translation requests.
- Documents and maintains archives for all interpretation and translation requests.
- Teaches interpreter training sessions and advises staff of available language resources.
- Rounds with limited-English proficient patients to inform them of their right to interpreter services.
- Demonstrates expansive knowledge of medical terminology in both source and target language.
- Abides by the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) Ethical Guidelines and Standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications.
