ENL Teacher & Coordinator
Position Overview The ENL Teacher & Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring our multilingual learners receive the highest-quality education and support. This position is shared between our middle school campus in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn and high school sampus in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and requires both instructional expertise in English as a New Language (ENL) instruction and strategic coordination of services to ensure compliance with state regulations, effective programming, and strong family engagement. The ENL Teacher & Coordinator will work closely with instructional staff, administrators, and families to create an inclusive and effective learning environment for English language learners (ELLs).
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
Instructional Responsibilities
- Provide direct ENL instruction to small groups and individual students in both push-in and pull-out models across middle and high school campuses.
- Design and deliver differentiated instruction aligned with state English Language Proficiency standards to support multilingual learners' academic and language development.
- Co-plan with content area teachers to integrate language supports and scaffolds into core subject instruction.
- Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Support students in meeting NYSESLAT goals.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, including language proficiency levels and accommodations.
Coordination Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive ENL program that meets state requirements and ensures equitable access to rigorous instruction for ELLs.
- Ensure school-wide compliance with ENL regulations, including identification through the NYSITELL process, placement, annual assessments (NYSESLAT), and exiting procedures.
- Support general education teachers in implementing effective instructional strategies for ELLs.
- Lead professional development sessions on best practices for supporting multilingual learners.
- Collaborate with school leaders to monitor and improve ENL services and programming.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the school, families, and external organizations to ensure strong communication and advocacy for ELLs.
- Organize and facilitate parent workshops and engagement activities tailored to multilingual families.
- Maintain documentation for state and federal reporting requirements related to ELL services.
Core Qualifications
- Valid New York State certification in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) required.
- Minimum of two years of ENL teaching experience, preferably in a middle or high school setting.
- Strong understanding of ENL compliance requirements and best practices in language acquisition.
- Experience collaborating with general education teachers to support language learners in content classes.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Bilingual Spanish proficiency is a plus.
Work Environment & Schedule
- This role requires travel between the middle school and high school campuses.
