General Summary:Under general supervision of a certified teacher, provides instructional assistance to assigned student(s) with severe hearing loss by facilitating student's access to classroom and instructional activities, as well as encouraging appropriate interaction with peers and adults.
Essential Functions:- Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
- Takes directions from the teacher and child.
- Communicates using language appropriate for the child and clarifies aspects of the child's surroundings (i.e. routines, rules, and concepts).
- Interprets or paraphrases instructions, stories told aloud, and other spoken exchanges.
- Tutors one-on-one and/or performs other tasks specific to the given environment.
- Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
- Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, tools, and equipment.
- Effectively uses personal technology devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Work Experience:- Bachelor's Degree in interpreting, American Sign Language, Special Education, or related field and one (1) year interpreting experience
Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge and skill in American Sign Language and/or Total Communication. Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations. Extensive knowledge of business English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematical computation. Knowledge of the principles of office management. Knowledge of the records and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation and utilization of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, colleagues and all other stakeholders involved in the activities of the job.
Working Conditions:Conducts duties primarily in a classroom setting with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires ability to conduct duties that require constant attention working with students and interacting with a variety of adults. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to fifty pounds. Occasional travel is required; no overnight travel required.
Responsibility:No direct budgetary responsibility.
Evaluation:Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
