ASSIGNED WORK DAYS PER YEAR: 181 days (School Year Days) - 35 hours per week

Primary Job Functions: To facilitate communication between students with hearing impairments and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. Other duties that may be performed when not required to provide interpreting may include tutoring, note taking, participation in meetings as a member of the educational team, and other duties to support the educational environment.
Minimum Qualifications and Credentials Required: - Educational Requirements/certification: Two year college degree preferred.
- Must be certified by the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and/or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- Fluent in English.
- Knowledge of school environment is preferred.
- American Sign Language (ASL), Signing Exact English (SEE), and/or other sign systems.
- Able to work effectively with staff and administration.
- Able to provide some tutoring to students when interpreting is not warranted.
Essential Functions: - Provide sign-to-voice/voice-to-sign interpreting which may include American Sign Language and/or oral interpreting depending upon the needs of the students.
- Encourage the classroom teacher(s) to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences of students.
- Participate in educational team meetings or offer input to provide insight on the success of communication strategies.
- May provide interpreting for extracurricular activites and parent meetings as directed (i.e., back-to-school night, graduation, etc.) These activities/meetings may extend beyond the school day and must be given prior notice in a timely manner.
- Provide help with professional development to orient staff and/or peers through inservice trainings as needed.
- Communicate effectively and accurately to the students' teacher(s) on an as needed or regular basis to enhance the students' learning and progression in the curriculum.
- Communicate regularly with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher of Record (TOR) on assignments, grades, work ethic, participation in class, and IEP goals.
- Provide tutoring and/or note taking and other support services (i.e., photocopying, typing, and keeping data) only when interpreting is not needed.
- Monitor on a regular ongoing basis (where applicable), the effectiveness of hearing aids and other instruments intended to improve the students' ability to receive auditory input and keep data.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning the students and his/her personal and academic records.
- Be an example of exemplary adult behavior for students.
- Project a genuine care and concern for all students.
- Comply with all Avon Community School Corporation policies, guidelines, procedures, and protocols.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or designee.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
