PGLS is looking for Bafut (Cameroon) Language Interpreters for on site, video remote, and/or over-the-phone interpreting - on July 14th, 2025
These is “1099” (Independent Contractor) position with the interpretation to take place preferably onsite (OS). We also accept interpretation via video (VRI) or over the phone (OPI), depending on the interpreter's location.
Interpreter Functions:
- Serve as an Interpreter for an assignment with the Fairfax County Health Department - in Springfield, VA
- Provide parties with clear and exact interpretations of verbal communication with no additions or omissions.
- Provide interpretations of questions, answers, statements, arguments, explanations, and other forms of verbal communication.
- Render sight translations of documents as needed.
- Impart thought, purpose, spirit, emotions, and tone of speaker from source language into target language, and vice-versa.
- Inform relevant parties of any factor that may hinder your performance.
- Comply with applicable ethics and standards.
Requirements
- Hold a valid driver’s license, or any government-issued valid form of identification.
- Access to a laptop or desktop computer with 4GB (RAM) memory or higher and broadband (high-speed internet connection).
- Access to a mobile phone as a back-up device.
- Access to a headset that connects to the computer/ phone using a cable (not a wireless headset).
- A quiet workspace/home office with no distractions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Interpreter MINIMUM qualifications (non-medical settings):
- At least two (2) years of interpreting experience, paid or as a volunteer
- Two (2) relevant professional references that can vouch for the candidate’s work as an interpreter OR one (1) relevant professional reference and one (1) relevant professional letter of recommendation
- Near native-level proficiency in English and native level in Bafut/ Fut.
Medical Interpreter MINIMUM qualifications (medical settings):
- Certification as a medical interpreter from a 40-hour program or equivalent, specifically for medical interpreting (i.e., CHIT Community Healthcare Interpreter Training)
- At least two (2) years of interpreting experience, professionally paid or as a volunteer, in a healthcare setting
- Two (2) relevant professional references who can vouch for the candidate’s work as an interpreter OR one (1) relevant professional reference and one (1) relevant professional letter of recommendation.
Desired but not required:
- Certificate of professional interpreter training (at least 40 hours of training).
If available, interpreters should provide proof of:
- Certifications
- Test results from other organizations (testing centers, other LSPs, etc.).
