Job Title: On-site/On-Call Sign Language Interpreter
Location: NSWCCD Combatant Craft Division, Virginia Beach, VA 23518
Job Summary: We are seeking qualified and professional Sign Language Interpreters to provide on-site support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) employees at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD). The role involves delivering high-quality interpreting, transliterating, and sight translation services for regularly scheduled and anticipated needs, for up to 1000 hours per year.
Work Schedule:
- Period of Performance: October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026
- On-site Hours: Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide fluent communication and cultural mediation between employees using sign language interpreting, transliterating, and/or sight translation services.
- Send confirmation of assignment, including name(s) and certification(s), to the designated government contact at least three business days prior to the event.
- Arrange for a qualified alternate interpreter in case of planned or emergency leave.
- Notify the designated government contact of any delay in arrival and provide an estimated time of arrival (ETA).
Required Qualifications & Security Requirements:
- All interpreters must be U.S. Citizens and authorized for access to Carderock Division facilities.
- A current, valid interpreter certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is mandatory.
- A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation.
- Linguistic expertise in both ASL and English to provide fluent communication.
- Proficiency in sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign using ASL, Pidgin Sign English (PSE), Manually Coded English (MCE), Contact Sign, Tactile Sign, or Oral Transliteration.
- Ability to convey nuance, tone, inflection, and the overall spirit of a message.
- Ability to keep pace with normal conversation in all contexts.
- Ability to voice interpret when a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual's speech is not easily understood.
- Must uphold the RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
