Early childhood is a critical time for language development, socialization, and building confidence. As our ASL interpreter, you won't just translate words—you'll open doors to learning, friendship, and self-expression for a child at a pivotal stage of development.
Your Role Will Include:
You'll serve as the vital communication link in a preschool classroom, ensuring a young deaf or hard-of-hearing student has full and equal access to every learning moment, friendship, and discovery.
- Interpret the World of Learning – Provide real-time ASL interpretation of classroom instruction, teacher guidance, and peer conversations, making every lesson accessible and engaging.
- Foster Friendships – Support social-emotional development by interpreting during playtime, circle time, and group activities, helping the student build meaningful connections with classmates.
- Meet Them Where They Are – Adapt your signing style and vocabulary to match the developmental level of a preschooler, ensuring comprehension while supporting language growth.
- Be Part of the Team – Collaborate with teachers, speech-language pathologists, and support staff to reinforce educational goals and maintain consistent communication strategies.
- Model Language Excellence – Encourage both expressive and receptive communication skills by demonstrating clear, age-appropriate ASL use that supports early language development.
- Make Every Activity Inclusive – Facilitate full participation in music, movement, art, sensory play, and all the joyful activities that make preschool special.
- Uphold Professional Standards – Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines in educational interpreting, ensuring trust and professionalism in all interactions.
Qualifications:
- Certification in American Sign Language Interpreting (RID, NAD, or state certification).
- Experience or interest in working with young children.
- Flexibility and creativity in adapting to the dynamic preschool environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with educational teams.
- Commitment to inclusive education and child-centered communication.
Salary and Benefits:
- $25.00 - $35.00/hour based on qualifications and experience.
Location & Shift Times:
- Delano Community Education.
- Part-Time, 2-4 days per week, 8:15am - 11:45am (3.5 hours/day).
- Additional hours may be available based on program needs.
