Overview
Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities.
This is a remote position based in Australia or New Zealand. With a sufficient timezone overlap with the team, we're able to hire eligible candidates for this role from any location in Australia and New Zealand.
About The Role
We’re looking for a Principal Technical Program Manager to lead the next chapter of Atlassian’s internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) strategy.
In this role, you’ll partner with engineering to build a fully automated, scalable localization system and to shape where it does—and does not—make sense to localize our products. You’ll drive the technical programs that modernize our i18n platform, and the business conversations that ensure we invest localization effort where it creates the most value.
You’ll be operating at both system and strategy level: designing how localization flows through our toolchain, and using data to steer market and language decisions.
Responsibilities
What you’ll do
- Define and own the multi-year program roadmap for Atlassian’s internationalization and localization platform.
- Lead programs to automate end-to-end localization workflows across our toolchain (e.g., code repos, TMS, CI/CD), reducing manual work and errors.
- Partner with engineering teams to embed i18n readiness into services and front-ends (e.g., string handling, pluralization, RTL, formatting).
- Drive adoption of shared i18n libraries, patterns, and tooling across product teams.
- Use product, usage, and commercial data to recommend where to expand, maintain, or reduce localization coverage.
- Collaborate with Product and GTM teams to align language strategy with market and customer needs.
- Establish and track metrics for localization throughput, automation coverage, defect rates, and time-to-market for new languages.
- Communicate plans, trade-offs, and impact clearly to senior engineering and business stakeholders.
Qualifications
On your first day, we’ll expect you to have
- 10+ years of experience as a Technical Program Manager, Engineering Manager, or similar role leading complex technical software programs.
- Strong understanding of modern SaaS architectures and software delivery practices (services, frontend, APIs, CI/CD).
- Experience in Internationalization or localization of software products
- Proven ability to:
- Set and execute multi-quarter roadmaps across multiple teams.
- Manage complex dependencies and unblock systemic issues.
- Use data to drive trade-offs and investment decisions.
- Communicate effectively with executives, engineers, and business partners.
- Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces and designing new operating models.
