At Fearless, the
Intern serves in the capacity of
Rails + Localization Intern on a project responsible for modernization initiative within the Maryland Department of Labor.
The Impact You Will Create
This role is accountable for supporting the Employers Workflow within the customer's application, contributing directly to Ruby on Rails feature support, UAT resolution, translation rollout, and structured documentation updates. Partnering with Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and State stakeholders, this intern delivers user-facing improvements and production-ready enhancements within an established application architecture.
Your Responsibilities In This Role
- Address UAT feedback tickets.
- Assist with minor bug fixes in Ruby on Rails.
- Update content and user-facing copy.
- Support translation and localization implementation.
- Assist with documentation updates.
- Participate in agile ceremonies and team collaboration.
- Contribute directly to production code and user-facing improvements.

Qualifications Required
- Experience with Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with JavaScript and CSS.
- Ability to read and modify existing production code.
- Comfort working within an established application architecture.
- Experience using Git and GitHub (branching, pull requests, code review workflows).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Motivation to learn and grow technical skills.
- Ability to manage scoped work independently.
- Passion for supporting community-impacting digital services.
- Internship or entry-level experience in backend or full-stack development.
- Experience working within existing applications preferred.
- Experience in agile development environments preferred.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer or during meetings.
- Must be able to travel occasionally to client sites or company meetings.
- Ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and in-person, requiring clear speech, listening, and written communication skills.
- Ability to move within an office environment, including reaching for files, using office equipment, and occasional light lifting (up to 10 pounds).
