Description ** This position requires flexible hours to include evenings and weekends **GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for ensuring effective communications between all parties including faculty, staff and students, which includes simultaneous voice interpreting for some individuals and simultaneous or consecutive sign interpreting for others.
Qualifications: KSA's, EducationKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of working with students who have additional physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Able to work with people who are unfamiliar with working with deaf or hard of hearing students. Able to work with people who are uninformed regarding the use of an interpreter.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:High School diploma required. Four year degree from an Interpreter Training Program or a major in the field of Deafness is preferred. Level III VQAS (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening) or above (scale I-IV). RID National Certification, CI/CT preferred. Two years of experience as a sign language interpreter, preferably in the educational setting.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Physical requirements and DisclaimerPHYSICAL CONDITIONS:Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal. Frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and other physical activities are required. Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals, regular stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching and significant pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions are also required. Required to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is often required. Interpreters are prone to developing Repetitive Motion injuries due to excessive wrist, arm and shoulder movements. May require standing for long periods of time.
