Organizational Setting

The Department of Management (MT) provides a "platform of services" that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows: "MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose". Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States. One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination of knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States.

To facilitate the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA's work and mandate, the Division of Conference and Document Services (MTCD) coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities for its users and clients, both internal and external, by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official IAEA languages, i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and editing, printing and distributing publications.

The MTCD Language Services Section (LSS) is responsible for coordinating, managing and delivering language services for the Agency. The Section promotes multilingualism and maintains language standards of the organization through editing and translation of Policy Making Organ (PMO) documents, incoming and outgoing Secretariat documents and correspondence, web articles and advocacy material, Agency publications and other content.The English Language Service is one of six language teams in the Language Services Section within the Division, responsible for the drafting, editing and translation of content, as required, into English. Content is required to be of a high quality and often short deadlines have to be met.

Main Purpose

As a member of a team led by the Service Head, the incumbent translates, drafts and edits, as required, a range of administrative, legal, economic, scientific and technical content.

Role

The Language Specialist (Translator) applies analytical and linguistic skills to translating, drafting or editing content, as required. He/she might need to clarify points of language in English content for other Language Service teams.

The Language Specialist (Translator) may be responsible for all or some of the following functions:

Translate into English a broad range of administrative, legal, scientific and technical content ensuring that translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original content.

Edit content in English, as required.

Draft official records of official Policy Making Organs (PMO) meetings, or any other type of document, as required.

Clarify points of language in English content for other Language Service teams.

Research terminology to assist in the development of the central terminology database.

Perform any other duties, as required, to support the work of the Service.

Suggest innovative solutions and workflow efficiencies, as appropriate, to streamline the work of the Service.

Qualifications, Experience And Language Skills

Bachelor's Degree - University degree in languages or a related field. Degrees in other fields will be considered as appropriate.

At least five years of relevant working experience in translating texts into English.

Experience in an international organization would be a strong asset.

English as mother tongue or principal language of education, with a profound knowledge of its grammar, style and usage.

Familiarity with the IAEA and its operations is an asset.

Knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Office software and IT translation tools, in particular Trados Studio and MultiTerm.

High-level ability to translate into English from two UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

Knowledge of another official UN language would be considered an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $70212 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 28085*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy , education grant , relocation and repatriation expenses ; Other benefits include 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave travel , pension plan and health insurance.
