We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) to support communication and ensure equal access to education for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The SLI will interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and provide communication assistance for students, teachers, and staff. This role is vital in creating an inclusive, accessible, and supportive learning environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in both classroom and non-classroom settings.
- Facilitate effective communication between students and teachers, staff, and peers throughout the school day.
- Assist with classroom discussions, lectures, group activities, and meetings by providing real-time ASL interpretation.
- Support students during extracurricular activities, school events, and field trips as needed.
- Work closely with teachers, special education staff, and administration to ensure accommodations and individualized support plans are being met for deaf or hard-of-hearing students.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and uphold professional ethics and standards in interpreting practices.
- Attend and participate in professional development activities to enhance interpreting skills and knowledge.
- Collaborate with parents and guardians to ensure proper communication and understanding of students needs.
Qualifications:
- Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (e.g., RID, NIC, or equivalent).
- Proven experience interpreting in educational settings (K-12 preferred).
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Knowledge of deaf culture and the unique educational needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Ability to interpret in both individual and group settings, adapting to different teaching styles and student needs.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, staff, students, and families.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
- Experience with educational interpreting or familiarity with IEPs and individualized accommodations.
- Knowledge of additional sign languages or regional variations of ASL.
- Familiarity with assistive technology for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
