Job Description:
- The Spanish Medical Translator/Interpreter will support IDOH by providing translation and interpretation services to facilitate communication between individuals and organizations. This role focuses on breaking language barriers to ensure public services are accessible to non-English speakers, particularly the Hispanic community. The position also involves promoting IDOH projects and programs through translation efforts and serving as a liaison between IDOH and Spanish-speaking families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate and interpret for multiple divisions/agencies, adhering to IDOH and MCH standards.
- Provide accurate translations for a variety of materials including brochures, legal documents, and client letters.
- Assist with interpretation requests at the front desk, lead three-way calls, and provide support during community events.
- Utilize glossaries, research terminology, and use appropriate software for delivery.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working with diverse teams.
- Attend meetings and provide interpretation as needed.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or 3+ years of translation experience.
- Completion of 40-hour Medical Interpreting Training (e.g., Bridging the Gap).
- Native fluency in both English and Spanish with exceptional grammar and vocabulary skills.
- Preferred: ATA, CMI, or CCHI Certification.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and high-level cultural competency.
- Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and handle multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Microsoft Office and translation software.
- Knowledge of medical or industry-specific terminology.
- Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
Work Conditions:
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- No heavy lifting required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The position collaborates with IDOH staff and contractors to ensure compliance with requirements and supports continuous engagement with the Hispanic community statewide.
Personal Work Relationships:
The role involves working with a diverse group of partners and maintaining cooperative relationships to address daily challenges and interpret policies and regulations.

Pay: $32.00 - $35.00 per hour
