POSITION SUMMARY
The Interpreter works as part of the clinical team and is responsible for accurate interpretation services for patients and staff. The interpreter is the primary interface between the clinical staff, office staff, and Haitian patients. This position reports to the Clinical Manager of their site.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Manages the flow of communication between the patient/family and staff in order to ensure accuracy and comfort.
- Works closely with providers, nursing, and support staff in each department to insure patient access to care with regard to bilingual services.
Operational Excellence
- Accurately interprets for non-English speaking Haitian patients and their family members to ensure patient understanding for both oral and written communication between all parties involved during patient visit.
- Demonstrates an understanding of potential barriers to communication including cultural differences, ethnic issues, gender issues, lack of education or differences between patient or provider life experiences.
Relationships
- Establish a favorable working relationship with all staff members associated with the organization.
- Possess a positive working relationship with patients, contractors, vendors, third party payor resources and related entities.

- Uphold and consistently represent the values, mission, and policies of the organization at all times.
PRIMARY TASKS AND DUTIES
- Accurately interprets for non-English speaking Haitian patients and their family members in all aspects of their visit, with providers, nursing staff, and support staff.
- Accurately translates any written communications from English into French Creole and assists patients in properly completing necessary paperwork.
- Works closely with providers to contact patients on their behalf, due to language barrier, to insure understanding of providers orders, prescriptions, appointment, lab work, referrals, etc.
- All other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/KEY COMPETENCIES
- Establishes rapport with patients encouraging patients to ask for clarification of any issue as they arise during the visit and relays legal requirements and essential information regarding informed consent, confidentiality and security of medical communication.
- Demonstrates an understanding of potential barriers to communication including cultural differences, ethnic issues, gender issues, lack of education or differences between patient or provider life experience.
- Understands the vital role of accurate interpretation and understands the risks of inaccurate interpretation in a medical situation.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High school diploma or GED
Experience
- 1 to 2 years’ experience of interpreting in the medical field.
- Competency Tested in medical translation
