Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication between deaf and hearing individuals (1 Elementary Student). The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of American Sign Language (ASL) and demonstrate proficiency in interpreting spoken language into sign language and vice versa. This role is essential in ensuring that all parties can communicate clearly and effectively in various settings, including educational and community environments. The position would be at either Montour Elementary School or New Horizon School.
Duties
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf individuals during school.
- Translate ASL back into spoken language for hearing individuals to ensure mutual understanding.
- Communicate effectively with the student to assess their needs and provide appropriate interpreting services.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times while interpreting sensitive information.
- Collaborate with other interpreters and professionals to enhance service delivery.
- Stay updated on best practices in interpreting and participate in ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional languages are a plus (bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply).
- Strong background in linguistics or related fields is preferred.
- Previous experience as a sign language interpreter is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Must be adaptable to different environments and able to handle varying levels of communication needs.
