Medical Interpreter (US-Based)

Overview
We are seeking a qualified Medical Interpreter to facilitate accurate and culturally appropriate communication between healthcare providers and patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). The Medical Interpreter plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety, informed consent, and equal access to healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, complete, and impartial medical interpreting between patients and healthcare professionals
- Interpret in consecutive and/or simultaneous modes, depending on the setting
- Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
- Accurately convey medical terminology, diagnoses, treatment options, and patient concerns without omission or addition
- Assist in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities, and telehealth environments
- Follow professional standards of practice and ethics for medical interpreting
- Clarify cultural references or communication nuances when appropriate, without altering meaning
- Arrive prepared, punctual, and professionally dressed for in-person assignments (if applicable)
Required Qualifications
- Fluency in English and at least one additional language (spoken and comprehension proficiency required)
- Proven experience in medical interpreting (in-person, OPI, or VRI)
- Strong understanding of medical terminology in both working languages
- Knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy requirements
- Excellent listening, memory, and note-taking
Preferred Qualifications
- Medical Interpreter certification (e.g., CCHI or NBCMI)
- Formal interpreter training (40-hour medical interpreting course or equivalent)
- Experience in hospital, emergency, behavioral health, or specialty care settings
- Familiarity with remote interpreting platforms (for OPI/VRI roles)
Work Environment
- Assignments may be on-site, remote (phone/video), or hybrid
- Schedule may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, or on-call hours depending on client needs
