About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and strategic operator with a passion for international growth and operational excellence. In this role, you will be responsible for managing the strategy and execution of OpenAI’s expansion efforts, with a particular focus on Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Your work will ensure that OpenAI’s innovative AI solutions are effectively localized, adopted, and scaled in key international markets, while aligning with our global mission.
Key Responsibilities
- International Strategy & Market Expansion
- Regional Strategy – Japan & APAC: Lead the development and execution of tailored market strategies for Japan and APAC, ensuring local nuance, compliance, and strategic alignment with OpenAI’s global vision.
- Market Research & Analysis: Conduct deep market and competitive analysis to identify growth opportunities, prioritize market entry, and drive product-market fit in diverse APAC geographies.
- Program Development: Design and implement scalable programs to support product launches, user acquisition, and brand growth across APAC markets.
- APAC Operations & Program Management
- Operational Planning: Partner with regional cross-functional teams to execute go-to-market initiatives, operational rollouts, and customer success programs.
- Localization & Market Readiness: Ensure all regional programs, content, and product experiences are tailored to local languages, cultural expectations, and regulatory environments.
- Program Tracking & Reporting: Build frameworks for measuring success, tracking KPIs, and iterating quickly based on feedback and performance data.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership
- Internal Alignment: Coordinate with product, marketing, legal, operations, and finance teams to ensure regional programs are fully integrated with OpenAI’s global strategy.
- Project Leadership: Lead complex, high-priority projects that span multiple APAC countries and business functions, leveraging your ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize competing interests.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize advanced analytics to assess program performance and adjust strategies as needed to maximize impact and drive sustainable growth.
- Strategic Impact & Vision
- Innovation & Thought Leadership: Serve as a thought leader in international strategy and regional program management. Represent OpenAI in Japan and APAC at industry events, conferences, and high-level meetings with stakeholders.
- Long-Term Growth: Contribute to long-term planning to ensure our presence and offerings in Japan and the broader APAC region are sustainable, impactful, and aligned with our mission to benefit all of humanity through safe and innovative AI technologies.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in strategy, operations, or program management roles with a focus on international markets.
- Significant experience in Japan and APAC, with a deep understanding of cultural, regulatory, and market dynamics.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with proven ability to use data insights to drive decision-making.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and project management capabilities across diverse, cross-cultural environments.
- Experience managing multi-market programs and driving business growth through localized, high-impact strategies.
Location & Work Model
- This role can be based in strategic international hubs such as San Francisco, New York, London, or Tokyo.
- We offer a hybrid work model (typically 3 days in the office per week) and provide relocation assistance where needed.
- Some international travel is required to support regional initiatives and foster global partnerships.
